When the driver following you is not observing the safe following distance, you may experience increased stress and anxiety. You may be concerned about what can happen when you encounter an unexpected situation, and the other driver lacks enough space and time to stop. This can lead to you not paying attention to your driving, which can equally be dangerous.
So, how can you respond safely?
Stay clam
Although easier said than done, try as much as possible to stay calm. Understandably, you may be angry, as the other driver’s action is endangering you. However, take a few deep breaths and keep driving.
Maintain your speed
A driver in a hurry may tailgate you to get you to increase your speed. Do not feel pressured to do this. You should maintain your speed. And when you want to brake, do so more gently to allow them to see your brake light and respond accordingly. Suddenly hitting your brakes can result in a rear-end collision because they may not have time to slow down.
Let them pass
When safe, allow the other driver to pass. When on a multi-lane road, move into the right lane, so they can use the left lane for passing. When on a single-lane road, pull over into a well-lit parking lot or gas station.
Ensure you signal your intentions when moving out of the way. Additionally, when they pass, avoid giving them eye contact or using gestures to communicate your frustration. Engaging can escalate the situation. You want them to drive away as soon as possible.
These tips do not excuse a tailgater’s behavior. They help keep you safe. If a tailgater causes an accident, resulting in you sustaining an injury, you can hold them liable for the damages you incur.
