Child custody of a special needs child can be challenging

Having to create a parenting plan is something that’s challenging, even in the best of circumstances. The challenge becomes even greater when the child has special needs because the parents have to consider those individual needs while they’re setting the terms.

All parenting plans have to be tailored to the child. When parents have a medically complex child or one who has special needs, they will likely need a parenting plan for only that child, even if they have other children.

Creating structure for the child

Children who have special needs often thrive on having a set routine. This may be necessary because of specific medication, personal care or therapy schedules. The parenting plan needs to address those in a way that makes it possible for both parents to follow the schedule.

Consider transition day plans

Transportation is sometimes challenging when you have a child who has special needs. Both parents should ensure they have a plan to address those challenges. One thing to consider is the possibility of sharing an accessible van if that’s required for the children to travel around safely.

Unique living arrangements might be necessary

Some children who have special needs may need durable medical equipment that must remain stationary. This could mean that either both parents have to have the equipment in their home or they have to allow the children to remain in one home while they move in and out of that home.

Both parents need to work closely together to ensure they set the parenting plan that benefits the children. Working with someone who understands special needs parenting may be beneficial.
